San Juan Capistrano is a city in the southern part of Orange County, California, and one of the oldest European-founded communities in the state. Its origins reach back to 1776, when Mission San Juan Capistrano was established by Spanish missionaries, planting the seed of a settlement that grew around the mission compound. Today about 35,000 residents live in a city that has held onto its historic character even as Orange County urbanized around it, and the Mission remains the community's spiritual and symbolic centerpiece.
