Cambria is an unincorporated seaside community in northern San Luis Obispo County, California, set along scenic Highway 1 about midway between San Francisco and Los Angeles. Roughly 6,000 people live here, drawn by the mild Central Coast climate, a dramatic shoreline, and a village atmosphere built around tourism, the arts, and small-scale hospitality rather than large industry. The community's defining feature is its coastline. Moonstone Beach, with its smooth pebbles, sheltered coves, and a mile-long wooden boardwalk, fronts a row of inns and restaurants and offers sweeping views across the Pacific. To the north, Hearst Castle and the Piedras Blancas elephant seal rookery make Cambria a natural base for exploring the San Simeon area, while the open ranchland and rolling hills of the coastal range rise to the east. Cambria's built character reflects its setting. Residential neighborhoods are scattered across forested hillsides and elevated marine terraces, with pine-shaded lots on the slopes and more open, ocean-view parcels nearer the bluff. Public schools are operated by the Coast Unified School District, a small district of about four schools serving the local student population from kindergarten through high school. With no passenger rail and limited public transit, Cambria remains a driving community, and Highway 1 serves as its main artery, connecting the village north toward Big Sur and south toward Morro Bay and San Luis Obispo.
