Aptos is an unincorporated community in southern Santa Cruz County, California, strung along the Monterey Bay coast between the cities of Santa Cruz and Watsonville. Rather than a single incorporated city, Aptos is a collection of small villages — Aptos Village, Rio del Mar, Seacliff, Seascape, Cabrillo, and Aptos Hills-Larkin Valley — that together form a distinct coastal identity. The name comes from the Ohlone word for "The People," reflecting the region's deep Indigenous history. The area's character is shaped by its setting between two landscapes: the redwood forests and ridgelines of the Santa Cruz Mountains to the north and east, and the beaches and bluffs of Monterey Bay to the west. The Forest of Nisene Marks State Park preserves thousands of acres of redwood forest that regrew after the region's logging era, and its trail system extends deep into the mountains, including routes toward the epicenter of the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. Seacliff State Beach and Rio del Mar State Beach provide some of the county's most accessible shoreline. Aptos is also an education center, home to the main campus of Cabrillo College, a community college serving about 9,700 students. Public K-12 students attend schools in the Pajaro Valley Unified School District, including Aptos High School and Aptos Junior High. For residents, Aptos offers a quieter, more spread-out alternative to downtown Santa Cruz, with beach access, redwood trails, and village-scale shopping and dining, all within a short drive of the county's larger towns. Its position south of Santa Cruz also places it within commuting range of Silicon Valley over Highway 17, giving the area a mix of long-time locals, families, and commuters seeking a coastal foothold.
